the artist

Lester Jay Stone is an artist of remarkable skill and talent. He is a native of the state of Washington, now living and painting in Pennsylvania's Cumberland Valley. His work includes portraits, landscapes, and maritime art. Whatever the subject, he is equally at home with oil, watercolor and pastel, and his style - always realistic - runs from subtle to bold.

A graduate of the US Naval Academy, he spent over 30 years in the US Navy. His paintings of quiet foggy harbors, Chesapeake Bay skipjacks, and rocky shores with foaming ocean surf are a vital statement of his love and knowledge of the sea.

Stone is noted for his portraits of both children and adults. His watercolor portraits of children are especially appealing in their delicacy, and his portraits are treasured in private collections worldwide. His landscapes reflect his travels throughout the world and his observance of the beauty about him.

A member of the American Association of Marine Artists, the Salmagundi Club, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, the Baltimore Watercolor Society, and the Studio Club, Stone was a winner of the Bronze Medal of Honor for a watercolor at the National Arts Club.

His paintings may be found in the permanent collections of the U.S. Capital, Washington, D.C.; the U.S. Naval Academy; the Navy Combat Art Collection; and the U.S. Defense University.
